Barnstormer “Reserve” Cabernet Franc: $32 Very Good

The Barnstormer Winery “Reserve” Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) $32 [Very Good] gets the “new oak” treatment, and is full of toasty and oaky scents and flavors.  It is better balanced than Barnstormer’s regular Cabernet Franc and lacks that wine's green olive notes — both plusses.  Yet, it is also lacks intrigue and the juicy blackberry flavors of the regular wine.  Decant this wine if possible.

Medium ruby and slightly cloudy, the aromas show blunt aromas of toast, vanilla and black berries.  Air helps to dissipate the oaky aromas and round out the nose.  Medium bodied, plump and round, with fine clenching tannin, balance is very good.  Meaty flavors of black berries and fig are initially obscured by oaky elements, but eventually reach a more balanced state, although fruit remains dosed with oak extract.  The finish is somewhat gritty, balanced, with toasty/oaky notes and very good length.  March 2018
