Atwater “Skin Fermented” Chardonnay 2015: $30 Good

The Atwater Vineyards “Skin Fermented” Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $ [Good] is not as interesting as Atwater’s 2015 Skin Fermented Gewürztraminer, but neither are its faults as great.  This wine is an improvement over the 2014 Skin Fermented Chardonnay.  Plump, with a fair amount of tannin and modest easy-going flavors, this bottle is expensive given its quality.  Even so, newcomers to “orange wine” might want to give it a try.

Slightly cloudy, this Chardonnay is medium orange gold in color.  Light and diffuse aromas of oak, steel, peach and orangey citrus have modest appeal.  Medium bodied, dry, lightly tannic, with a full and textured mouth feel, balance is good.  Flavors of oak, steel, peach, orange-y citrus, and a bitter note are modestly intense with a rather stolid disposition.  The finish turns more tart, bitter and tannic with average length.  June 2017
