Damiani Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2015: $18 Very Good

The Damiani Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $18 [Very Good] is a well made wine, with very good flavor intensity.  While many barrel fermented wines are overly oaky and spicy, with fruit left playing second fiddle, this bottle avoids that trap — the balance of fruit and oaky characteristics is handled very well.  Sip this wine or drink it with dinner.

Dark straw in color, the aromas show ripe apple, butterscotch, vanilla, cardamom, and a mineral note.  Medium bodied, dry and silky, some alcoholic heat shows through.  Balance is good.  Flavors of ripe apple, butterscotch, vanilla, cardamom and a mineral note are somewhat spicy, with very good intensity.  The finish is spicy and a bit alcoholic, with very good length.  A dash of bitterness is left behind.  July 2017
