Treleaven “Barrel Fermented” Chardonnay 2016: $18 Good+ to Very Good

The Treleaven “Barrel Fermented” Reserve Chardonnay (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) $18 [Good+ to Very Good] abounds with the artifacts of oak barrel fermentation — smoke, toast, spice, vanilla.  There is a solid core of lemon-apple fruit too, but the oak is currently predominant.  This is a wine for oak lovers.  Drink it with snacks or dinner.

Dark straw yellow in color, the aromas are full of oaky notes — butter, smoke, spice, toast, vanilla — on top of a solid core of lemon-apple fruit.  Medium to full bodied, lightly viscous and mouth filling, the Trealeaven has a tight mouth feel.  Balance is good.  Lightly buttered apple fruit is accompanied by lemon cream, smoke, toast, spice, and a metallic/bitter note.  The flavors have very good substance but are quite oaky.  The finish is lightly bitter and oaky with good length.  Vanillin notes linger.  January 2018

Note: Some bottle age might assimilate the oaky notes, resulting in a “very good” wine.
