Hermann J. Wiemer “Magdalena” Cabernet Franc 2016: $37 Very Good

The Hermann J. Wiemer “Magdalena Vineyard” Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $37 [Very Good] is a soft wine with warm and meaty flavors that focus on vanilla, tobacco, and earth as much as fruit.  Wiemer’s regular 2016 Cabernet Franc is fresher and more interesting — and considerably less expensive as well.  The price of the Magdalena Vineyard Cabernet Franc was fixed at $32 from 2012 to 2015, and jumped to $37 this year — too high for a wine of this quality level.

Medium ruby/garnet in color, this wine is already showing hints of age.  Warm meaty aromas of vanilla and molasses-tinged fruit are accented by tobacco, peppery spice and cedar.  The nose is attractive.  Medium bodied and soft, there is just enough firm grippy tannin to hold this wine together.  Balance is good.  Ripe meaty flavors of red and black fruit are heavily accented by vanilla, tobacco, light peppery spice and earth.  Concentration is good.  Flavors fade in the finish, which is simultaneously soft and grittily tannic, with good length.  December 2017

Note: This is probably not a bottle to lay down.  Drink it now.
