Atwater “Skin Fermented” Gewürztraminer 2015: $30 Good

An “orange wine” may seem like an exotic creature, but the Atwater Estate Vineyards “Skin Fermented” Gewürztraminer (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $30 [Good] has enough juicy fruit that you may momentarily overlook the wine’s tannin and oaky influences.  Not a sipper, this bottle needs food.

Medium orange-tinted gold in color, this bottle is a bit cloudy.  Forthright aromas of lychee, peach, and orange are accented by oaky and steely notes.  Medium bodied, dry, with light (but noticeable) tannin and good acidity, balance is good.  Flavors of lychee, orange marmalade and peach have a juicy and satisfying quality, but oaky and bitter notes detract considerably.  Fruit fades in the oaky and bitter finish.  June 2017
