Dr. Konstantin Frank “Reserve” Gewürztraminer 2015: $20 Very Good+

The Dr. Konstantin Frank “Reserve” Gewürztraminer (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $20 is a very well-balanced, flavorful, medium-sweet wine.  Like the “regular” Dr. Frank Gewürztraminer, it is Riesling-like in character but more honeyed, with a distinctive rosy perfume & flavors. A nice wine to serve as an aperitif, it will work with some foods.  Forced to choose between this wine and the regular bottling, I would pick the regular Gewürz, for its sharper flavors, lower cost, and greater flexibility with food.

Medium lemon yellow in color, the aromas are tangy and pure, with scents of lychee, orange, grapefruit, rose, slate, and a meaty note.  Medium bodied, medium sweet, with a good deal of zesty spritz-y acidity, balance is very good.  Flavors of lychee, pear, ripe grapefruit, orange, roses, and slate-y mineral have very nice concentration and purity.  The rose and slate notes are a nice counterpoint to the fruit.  The long finish is very well balanced and shows more of the slate-y mineral notes.  Flavors linger.  September 2016
