Shepherdess Cellars Semi-Dry Gewürztraminer 2016: $16 Very Good

The Shepherdess Cellars Semi-Dry Gewürztraminer (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $16 [Very Good] packs a punch, with high alcohol and a good deal of sugar.  Luckily, it has solid flavors; its sweetness rarely seems cloying.  Serve this wine very cold as an aperitif, with snacks.

Dark straw to light gold in color, the aromas are oily and rich, with scents of honeyed pear, apricot, and a bit of lychee.  Full bodied, alcoholic, medium sweet, viscous, and moderately spicy, this is a big mouthful of wine.  Solid flavors of honeyed pear and apricot are accompanied by a moderate dose of peppery Gewürztraminer spice.  The finish turns toward alcohol and spice, with good length.  March 2018
