Goose Watch Pinot Grigio 2015: $16 Good

It is unclear if the Goose Watch Pinot Grigio (New York) 2015 $16 [Good] is a Finger Lakes wine.  The front label simply says “New York” but the website describes Pinot Grigio as being “a rare find in the Finger Lakes,” as if the grapes for this wine do indeed come from the Finger Lakes.  In any case, this offering does have the rich fruit of 2015 Finger Lakes Pinot Gris, but its appeal is circumscribed by a chem lab nose, iffy balance, and bitterness in the finish.

Medium lemon in color, the wine is infused with tiny bubbles on opening.  The aromas are initially sharp, acidic and sulfury, with light scents of lemon, apple, and a waxy note.  With more air the sulfury notes dissipate, but the aromas have an acidic chem lab quality.  Medium bodied, dry, with aggressive peppery acidity, balance is so-so.  Flavors of pineapple, apple, lemon, pepper and a waxy note  do have some richness but are rather stolid.  The finish is peppery, not well balanced, and marred by bitter notes.  October 2016
