Zugibe Sauvignon Blanc 2016: $18 Good+ to Very Good

The Zugibe Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $18 [Good+ to Very Good] has authentic aromas and flavors of Sauvignon Blanc, and shows some of the richness of the 2016 vintage.  Awkward balance (especially in the finish) keeps the wine from hitting the “very good” mark squarely.  Drinkers who favor tart gooseberry and mineral flavors will find something to like here.  Drink this bottle with food.

Bright medium lemon in color, the aromas showcase lemongrass, gooseberry, honeyed white peach, and chalky/smoky mineral.  Medium bodied, dry, with a full mouth feel and quite a bit of peppery acidity, balance is OK.  Flavors of gooseberry, white peach, grapefruit, lemongrass, smoky mineral and pepper have good concentration and an interesting personality, playing off honeyed peach against austere notes of gooseberry and pepper.  The finish is awkward and peppery, with good length.  March 2018
