Damiani “Sunrise Hill” Lemberger 2016: $22 Very Good to Very Good+

The Damiani “Sunrise Hill” Lemberger (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $22 [Very Good to Very Good+] is a full flavored wine.  It may have the most striking varietal characteristics of any Lemberger Damiani has made.  Nicely rich and fruity, with intense accents of tobacco, spice, black pepper and earth, this is a very good wine but needs time to come together.  Put this bottle in the cellar for a year or two or decant it.

Medium ruby in color, the tart and tangy aromas of black cherry, sour cherry, dates, toast, spice, black pepper, tobacco and earth have nice intensity and complexity.  Full bodied, with good acidity and light (somewhat awkward at present) tannin, balance is good.  Flavors of black and sour cherry, tobacco, dates, smoke, pepper and earth have very good intensity and a good deal of complexity.  This wine also has an appealing freshness.  The finish is lightly tannic and a bit gritty, with black pepper notes and good to very good length.  November 2017.
