Dr. Konstantin Frank Cabernet Franc 2015: $22 Very Good

Red wines have always taken a back seat at Dr. Frank.  While many of the whites have been stellar, far too many of the reds have been marred by wine faults and/or a marked rusticity.  Given this history, it was a pleasure to drink the Dr. Konstantin Frank Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) $22 [Very Good], a wine with no faults and a good deal of bright enticing fruit.  Pure, flavorful, with some zesty acidity, this is a good food wine.  Have it with dinner.

Bright medium ruby in color, the aromas have a zesty quality, with fruit in the forefront (raspberry and black currant) accented by peppery spice, vanilla, lead pencil and tobacco.  With air, the wine seems less raw, the aromas better integrated.  Medium bodied, silky, with medium intense gritty/grippy tannins, the Frank is more tannic and structured than many Finger Lakes Cabernet Francs.  Balance is very good.  Solid bright flavors of raspberry, black currant and black cherry are accented by tobacco, cedar, and peppery spice, with a notable saline undercurrent.  The finish is gritty and peppery, lifted by acidity, with very good length.

Note: This wine should improve over the next few years.
