Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc 2015: $24.50 Very Good

The Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $24.50 [Very Good] is a spicy wine, its raspberry and black cherry fruit laced with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco.  Wiemer has made steady progress with Cabernet Franc over the past several years. This well-balanced wine avoids the overly jammy fruit and excessive spice of some previous efforts.  It is worth seeking out.

Medium ruby in color, aromas of raspberry, black cherry, dark chocolate, tobacco and peppery spice are moderately intense.  The Wiemer is darker and more savory than many other Finger Lakes Cabernet Francs.  Medium bodied, with light grippy tannins and a satiny svelte mouth feel, balance is very good.  Flavors of raspberry, black cherry, bitter dark chocolate, tobacco, peppery spice and a slight “woody” note have good purity and concentration.  The finish is of a piece, slightly gritty, moderately peppery, with good length.  December 2016
