McGregor “Reserve” Cabernet Franc 2015: $25 Good+

Balancing the savory and fruity elements of Cabernet Franc can be difficult, and the McGregor Vineyard “Reserve" Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $25 [Good+] falls a bit short.  Although this wine has a good deal of fruit, saline and bitter elements stand out too prominently in the finish. Consequently, this bottle is no sipper.  It needs food.

Medium ruby in color, the aromas are on the savory side of the spectrum, with raspberry and sour cherry fruit matched by scents of menthol, tobacco, vanilla and lead pencil.  Medium bodied, with light grippy tannin, the McGregor has a tingly mineral mouth feel.  Flavors of raspberry and sour cherry are matched by equally strong notes of cedar, spice, lead pencil and tar.  There is a fairly intense saline streak too, which gives the wine a mouth watering quality.  The finish is lightly tannic, with sour, bitter, and saline elements very evident.  Length is good to very good.  February 2018
