Shalestone Cabernet Franc 2015: $20 Very Good to Very Good+

Shalestone Vineyards (“Red is All We Do!”) rarely misses a beat with its wines, and the Shalestone Vineyards Cabernet Franc (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $20 [Very Good to Very Good+] is no exception.  Dark colored, with lush cocoa and toast accented fruit flavors, this is a flexible wine that can be served at a wine bar or at dinner.  It improved after an overnight in the fridge, so do consider decanting this bottle or putting it away for a couple of years.

Dark purple ruby in color, the Shalestone is more deeply colored than a typical Finger Lakes Cabernet Franc.  Rich and mellow aromas show scents of raspberry, black currant and plum, accented by pepper, brown spice, chocolate, lead pencil and a hint of green bell.  Toasty notes emerge overnight.  Medium bodied, soft and satiny, with moderate gritty tannin, balance is good.  Plummy flavors of red and black fruit are inflected with cocoa, spice, lead pencil, and a slight green bell pepper note.  The finish is broad, somewhat gritty, with very good length.  February 2018
