Fox Run Cabernet Sauvignon 2014: $25 Good to Good+

The Fox Run Cabernet Sauvignon (Finger Lakes, NY) $25 [Good to Good+] is an unusual wine.  Most wines with strong green olive, bell pepper and/or grassy notes tend to lack substance.  The green notes come to the fore due to a lack of ripe fruit.  This wine is different.  It does not lack power and flavor, but scents of green olive, lead pencil and charcoal get the upper hand here, leaving the fruit in second place.  Buyers who are willing to take a gamble might buy a bottle and see if it improves with age.

Dark violet-tinged ruby in color, the aromas are tart.  Black berry and black cherry fruit of moderate intensity is heavily inflected by notes of green olive, lead pencil, charcoal, and tobacco.   Medium bodied, tart for a red wine (almost sour), with moderate tannin, balance is good.  Flavors of black berries, black cherry, fig, and lead pencil have a sour green olive quality and are somewhat bitter.  The finish is well balanced, but also gritty,  tart, and rather bitter.  Length is good.  November 2016
