McGregor Merlot 2015: $35 Good to Good+

The McGregor Vineyard Merlot (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $35 [Good to Good+] is a lightweight, with rather odd flavors of spice, medicine cabinet and red/blue fruit.  Awkward balance is an issue.  This wine is considerably overpriced given its quality.

Medium ruby in color, the aromas feature lots of spice (cinnamon, cloves), herbs, lead pencil, medicine cabinet and tart red & blue fruit.  Medium bodied, with light to medium firm tannin and a lightweight mouth feel, balance is awkward.  Flavors of tart red and blue fruit, spice, medicine cabinet, bitter herbs and a pronounced saline streak are medium intense.  The flavors are not helped by the medicine cabinet note.  The finish is tart, chalky/gritty, and awkwardly balanced.  Fruit, bitter herbs and medicine cabinet notes linger.  February 2018
