Hector Wine Company Syrah 2015: $28 Excellent

The Hector Wine Company Syrah (Seneca Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $28 [Excellent] is the best Syrah I have tasted from the Finger Lakes.  Full flavored, complex, with tangy acidity and very good balance, this wine is a real winner with food.  Perhaps most important, it is scrumptious.  You’ll want to drink every drop.  If many wineries get carried away describing their wines, and use terms which tend toward wishful thinking (e.g. “Chablis-like,” “delicate Mosel character”), Hector does not.  This wine actually has a real Northern Rhone character, and that is a big compliment.

Dark violet-tinged ruby in color, the aromas are a bit tart and fairly intense, with scents of blackberry, black cherry, strawberry, ferrous mineral, lead pencil, pepper, and hints of meat juices.  It is a very solid nose and shows more intensity and depth after a night in the fridge.  Medium to full bodied, with vibrant acidity and plenty of tannin, balance is very good.  Focused flavors of blackberry, black cherry, strawberry, lead pencil, anise, ferrous mineral and a hint of mint are concentrated, lively, and have that “give me another sip” quality.  The finish is balanced, fairly tannic, a bit spicy and quite long.  Flavors linger.  This wine should age nicely, and may well improve in quality.  November 2016
