Keuka Lake Leon Millot “Nouveau” 2015: $17 Good+

Nouveau wines are meant to be drunk a few weeks after the harvest.  As Jancis Robinson puts it, their “appeal for the wine drinker is that they are a refreshing and stimulating reminder of the passing of the seasons, a sort of liquid harvest tradition.”  Most people associate the word “nouveau” with Beaujolais, but these "new wines" are made from many (usually) red grapes.  All we expect from them is quaffability, lightness, refreshment, charm.

The Keuka Lake Vineyards Leon Millot “Nouveau” (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $17 [Good+] fits the bill.  It is a light and refreshing wine (10.5% alcohol) with unusual flavors of strawberry, floral herbal tea and dates.  Although not a “serious” wine, this bottle is well made, flavorful, and very gulp able.  It is much more successful and “Nouveau-like” than last year’s edition.

The KLV is light ruby in color and somewhat cloudy, with a few little bubbles.  Aromas of tart red berry, strawberry jam, floral herbal tea, anise, and metallic mineral have substance and are interesting.  Light bodied, dry, with lots of lively acidity, balance is good.  Flavors of tart red berries, strawberry jam, dates, tobacco and stony mineral are lively and interesting, although some drinkers may find the taste a bit odd.  The finish is good, with a little lipsmacking tang.  December 2015
