Red Tail Ridge Dornfelder 2015: $25 Good+

The Red Tail Ridge Dornfelder (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $25 [Good+] is beautifully colored and very well balanced but doesn’t pack much flavor punch, despite its dark color.  It is a step down from the 2014.  Sip this wine or drink it with casual fare.

The Dornfelder is dark violet in color, far darker than your average Finger Lakes red.   Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and black currant are accented slightly by notes of underbrush, graphite and mineral.  Medium bodied, with firm fine-grained tannin, balance is very good.  Flavors of blackberry are dominant, with fairly minor accents of spice, underbrush and graphite.  The finish turns a bit  tarter and grittier, with good length.  February 2017
