Fulkerson “Reserve” Syrah 2016: $25 Very Good to Very Good+

Very few Finger Lakes wines get the full “new French oak” treatment.  This wine is an exception.  The Fulkerson “Reserve” Syrah (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $25 [Very Good to Very Good+] exudes the toasty, smoky and coffee scents of new French oak barrels.  Fortunately, there is enough fruit in this wine to support this full-on treatment.  For lovers of new oak, this wine is a must.  Other drinkers should stick with Fulkerson’s regular 2016 Syrah, an unoaked wine which is also quite good.

Dark ruby in color, the Fulkerson exudes new oak scents — smoke, toast, coffee, charcoal — with solid blackberry and black cherry fruit underneath. Full bodied, soft and velvety, but with a good deal of firm tannic grip, balance is very good.  Flavors of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, toast, smoke, iron-like note and earth have very good concentration.  The finish is firm, tannic, and balanced.  Length is very good.  Spice and black fruit notes linger.  January 2018.
