Thirsty Owl “Lot 99” Red Wine: $12 Good to Good+

The Thirsty Owl Wine Company “Lot 99” Red Wine (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $12 [Good to Good+] is a blend of the hybrid grape Maréchal Foch and Pinot Noir.  The wine has some flavor, but would have been better without the oaky notes that impinge on the finish.  Drink this wine with casual foods — hamburgers, pizza, etc.

Medium ruby in color, the “99” has a peppery and spicy nose, with scents of black and red fruit, black pepper, oaky/mushroom notes, and mineral.  Medium bodied, silky, with medium unobtrusive tannin, the wine has a somewhat tough mouth feel.  Flavors of black berries, cherry, black pepper, mineral and dried mushroom have good concentration.  The finish shows too much in the mushroom/oak department, with some gritty tannin intruding, and a short finish.  December 2017
