Nathan K. Pinot Noir 2015: $38 Good+ to Very Good

The Nathan K. Pinot Noir (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $38 [Good+ to Very Good] is a very savory Pinot Noir, with aromas of menthol, juniper and cedar that are a match for the wine’s strawberry and black cherry fruit.  Initially quite tannic, this wine softens considerably with air.  Decanted, this bottle is drinkable now, but a better strategy would be to put this wine away for a few years.  It’s a gamble, especially given the hefty price tag, but something more sublime may emerge.

Medium ruby in color, aromas of cedar, juniper, menthol and lead pencil are a match for the wine’s solid strawberry and black cherry fruit.  With air, woodsy and tobacco notes emerge.  Medium bodied, with medium intense clenching tannin (which softens considerably with air), balance is good.  Flavors of strawberry and black cherry are heavily accented by lead pencil, cedar, green stems, and woodsy notes.  One also notes a moderately intense saline underpinning.  The finish is savory and lightly bitter, but fruit flavors manage to shine through.  Flavors linger.  January 2018
