Forge “Leidenfrost Vineyard” Dry Riesling 2016: $24 Very Good

If you love Tarte Tatin, the buttery caramelized French apple dessert, the Forge Cellars “Leidenfrost Vineyard” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $24 [Very Good] is for you.  This is not a sweet wine, but its flavors suggest the French dessert.  This wine can be sipped or consumed with food.

Dark straw in color, scents of very ripe apple-y fruit suggest Tarte Tatin, and are accompanied by notes of lime, honey, and slate.  Full bodied, very dry and soft, balance is a bit awkward.  Buttery flavors of apple, honey, lime, slate and lees-y notes have very good concentration, but there is an overripe quality to the fruit.  The finish is a bit ungainly, with good length, ending on a tart stony note.  This wine may need a bit of time to come together.  January 2018
