Hosmer Dry Riesling 2016: $17 Very Good

The Hosmer Dry Riesling (Cayuga Lake, Finger Lakes, NY) $17 [Very Good] is a crisp off-dry Riesling with good flavor concentration and copious gun flint and slate notes.  This is a flexible wine that can be sipped or served with dinner.

Pale lemon in color, the aromas are iniitially dominated by gunflint and slate, with minor accents of green apple, apricot and lemon.  With air, the fruit comes more to the fore, but the gunflint & slate notes do not disappear.  Medium bodied, off dry (just slightly sweet), with high acidity, balance is quite good.  Tart flavors of green apple, apricot, tangerine, anise, gunflint and chalky mineral have good poise and concentration.  The finish is mouth puckering with very good length.  June 2017

Note: This wine benefits from aeration, so pour it into a decanter if possible, or wait six months to a year before drinking.
