Weis Dry Riesling 2016: $18 Very Good+

Hans Peter Weis has worked at Dr. Konstantin Frank since 2006.  This year he started his own winery, housed in the former Limeberry space on Keuka Lake.  Unlike many other recent startups in the region, which have begun operations with one or two wines, Weis already has a full portfolio of nine wines.  The Weis Vineyards Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $18 [Very Good+] is an exciting debut.  In many ways, this exemplary wine defines the 2016 vintage, with its combination of vanilla-tinged ripe fruit and stony minerality.  Sip it or serve with a variety of foods.

Pale straw in color, the tart aromas of peach, lemon, beeswax, vanilla wafers, stones, and hints of honey are complex and appealing.  Medium bodied, dry, with high acidity, balance is very good.  Mouth watering flavors of peach, lime, beeswax, vanilla wafers, and stones are substantial, pure, and have an engaging multidimenstionality.  The finish is tart, lip smacking, with very good length.  August 2017

Note: This wine becomes tougher, even a bit tannic, after a night in the fridge.  Drink in one sitting or put this wine away in your cellar for future enjoyment.
