Billsboro Dry Riesling 2015: $14 Good

Quite dry and exceptionally tart, the Billsboro “Sawmill Creek Vineyards” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) $14 [Good] might have made a nice sparkling wine.  In this non-sparkling form, it is less successful, but is well made.  Not a sipper, be sure to drink this wine with a meal.

Pale lemon in color, the aromas are very tart and lemony, with scents of green apple, chalky mineral and raw acidity.  Medium bodied, very dry, with gobs of spritz-y tart acidity, balance is good in a tart style.  Flavors of green apple, pear, lime and chalk are accented by a steely/smoky note and are quite austere, with moderate concentration.  The finish is balanced but bracingly tart, lip smacking, with good length.  Smoky/chalky notes linger in the aftertaste.  October 2016

Note: The grapes for this wine were harvested very early (in late September) and were chaptalised (sugar was added), which explains in large part the lean austere quality of this bottle.
