Forge Cellars “Leidenfrost Vineyard” Dry Riesling 2015: $24 Good+ to Very Good

Among Forge’s three single vineyard wines from 2015, the Forge Cellars “Leidenfrost Vineyard” Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $24 [Good+ to Very Good] is the most unusual, and the weakest of the trio.  Initially, strong scents of smoke and gunflint obscrue other aromas and flavors, and it takes many hours of aeration for the wine to come around.  When the smoke finally clears altogether (two days after opening), this is a chunky pleasant wine.  Be sure to decant this bottle for several hours before drinking.

Dark golden straw in color, the aromas are initially full of gunflint and smoke, with buttery apricot fruit well obscured.  Full bodied, dry, soft, round and chunky, balance is good.  Solid flavors of stone fruit, smoke, gunflint, and citrus has a slightly oxydized character.  Oddly, however, the smoky/gunflint aromas nearly disappear after two days in the fridge, indicating the wine was reduced (needed oxygen), not oxidized.  Fruit fades in the smoky finish.  Length is good.  July 2017
