Wagner Dry Riesling 2015: $11 Very Good to Very Good+

If you were to hold a class on Finger Lakes Riesling, and needed a classic example at a reasonable cost, the Wagner Vineyards Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes, NY) 2015 $11 [Very Good to Very Good+] would be the wine to buy.  This citrus-y wine has pure and well-concentrated flavors, very nice balance, and shows what a terrific value Finger Lakes Riesling can be.  It is a fine dinner table wine and an exceptional value.

Medium lemon in color, there are tart aromas of citrus zest, apple, apricot, lime, and a beguiling shale/limestone note.  Medium bodied, dry, with lots of zesty acidity, the Wagner has a nice round and silky mouth feel and very good balance.  The flavors feature apple, lime, citrus zest, and a distinct nectarine/apricot center, with a fine chalky/slate-y mineral note to add complexity.  The flavors have harmony and concentration.  The finish is balanced, lip-smacking, with very good length.  September 2016
