Wicked Water “Cedo” Cabernet Franc 2016: $17 Very Good

The Wicked Water “Cedo” Cabernet Franc (Sawmill Creek Vineyards, Finger Lakes, NY) 2016 $17 [Very Good] is an "early release" of this variety, but don’t expect something akin to a fresh, fruity and light “nouveau”.  No, this is a big and alcoholic wine, packed with a good deal of fruit and tannin, almost Californian in character.  It is not an elegant wine, but it does deliver a solid flavor punch.  Drink it with cheeses or dinner.

Medium dark ruby in color, the Cedo has plump and forthright aromas of ripe red and black fruit, milk chocolate, cedar, tobacco, peppery spice and a hint of band aids.  Full bodied, soft, showing some alcoholic hotness, with substantial mouth puckering tannin, balance is good.  Big chunky flavors of red and black fruit, milk chocolate, dried leaves, tobacco and peppery spice are attractive.  The finish is soft and sprawling, grittily tannic, with very good length.  August 2017
